Both powdered and non-powdered latex gloves have been around for a long time. In 1988, however, the UK Medical Devices Agency issued a Safety Notice about powdered latex gloves stating that they can increase the risk of, or worsen the effects of, a latex allergic reaction. The issuance of this report caused a surge in the popularity of non-powdered glove usage which continues to this day. In situations where allergic reaction is not a concern, the powdered gloves are widely preferred, mainly due to the fact that the powder on the gloves make them easier to put on and take off. Both types of gloves continue to be used widely in non-medical settings such as automobile repair, yard work, garbage handling, food service, beauty salons, etc. This may also explain why nitrile gloves are so popular in medical facilities.
