pacjw -> Nitrile Glove Allergy? (11/15/2006 7:36:00 PM)

What materials used in NITRILE gloves might cause an allergic reaction. My DDS uses them b/c of his latex allergy. When he used them with me, my face turned red, and I experienced itching and burning.

some of the same chemicals used in manufacturing latex and nitrile are the same. specifically the vulacnizer. if someone has a contact reacion to the latex gloves as well as the nitrile ones it is likely due to the common chemical. however if someone has a true latex allergy ( to the natural latex protien) then they should not have the same reaction to the nitrile. you can find out some more info on nitrile and latex at wikipedia.

I too am allergic to nitrile gloves but I am not allergic to nitrile, I am allergic to the sulphur acceleratant used to speed up the manufacturing process. Maybe this is what you are allergic to too? Sulphur is a very common allergen and you can get accelerant-free nitrile gloves which I find I'm not allergic to. If you are allergic to car/bike tires then it will be the nitrile you are allergic to as these are made of nitrile too but if you're ok with these and the accelerant-free nitrile glovse but are allergic to other nitrile gloves then it's most likely the sulphur you are allergic to.

It's a good question. We're doing a bit of research to see what could be the culprit. Interestingly, it's in large part because of allergic reactions to such gloves as latex exam gloves that Nitrile Exam Gloves became the glove of choice.

I am so glad to have found this site, I have an online printing business. www.printit4less.com, We use these types of gloves all the time, I have been experiencing a strange sensation on my face, ears & head area, as if there are ants walking on my head & face, I checked with my doctor, had a blood test done and I am scheduled for a Head Scan to eliminate the possibility of MS. Since the sensation is only on my face & head I started to eliminate all possibilities and reached the conclusion that this may be the effect of the gloves.

The nhs trust I work for have now swopped to using nitryl from the previous vinyl gloves .
As a latex allergy sufferer I thought it would be advantageous as I need the grip improvment, however my asthmatic chest has become pretty intolerable lately . I wondered if there could be a link with the nitryl gloves, as it seems to be the same time period as the gloves were introduced. Please can anyone verify....? I am further convinced because of the improvement at weekends - away from the work site. Thanks

I came down with a nasty rash on my hands wearing nitrile gloves, spread up my arms, was on my face from smoking, where I push my glasses up on the bridge of my nose, and the corner of my eye where I scratched. Woke up the other morning looking like Quasimodo, eye swollen shut, lips all big and puffy. It's now gone systemic, and I've got one hell of a cough, voice doesn't sound so good either. I'm breaking out anyplace my skin gets irritated. They put me on steriods, for 3 weeks, as the usual dose wasn't helping, and today some of the rash started getting infected. My hands were so swollen you couldn't tell I had knuckles, looked like some kind of elephantitis, but the swelling is now going down. this has been pure hell, the itching went on for days & days, only thing that helped was ice. They really should put warnings on the boxes of nitrile & latex.

If the gloves are powdered, you are inhaling some of the stuff. I've been coughing for a week now, not to mention alot of other unpleasantness.......yes, I would say it's the nitrile, and latex will do the same thing.
