What to Consider Before Buying a Mobility Scooter

Postby SouthFlorida » Tue Apr 13, 2010 11:29 pm

Mobility scooter are a popular and most convenient way for people with limited mobility to get around in their homes and to perform their daily activities. If you get tired after walking to another part of your house or to your mailbox, using a scooter can help maintaining your independence with the use of a comfortable scooter.
People who benefit from having a scooter include people with limited mobility, people with a high risk of falls or take them a long time to walk from A to B!

If you have one of these symptoms then you will qualify to get a scooter from Medicare and your secondary insurance at no cost.

With a large selection of models to choose from, how do you choose the right scooter for your needs? it's like shopping for a car or anything else, first you need to ask yourself what do you need it for? answering this question is the first step for choosing the right scooter!

Here is an easy checklist i prepared to help you making your decision:

Your weight - How much you weigh. most of the small to medium sized scooter have a weight capacity up to 300lbs

Scooter dimensions - The size of the scooter is going to be important factor. if you are using the scooter for indoors consider dimensions that will fit into your home doors. while most of the small scooter are designed to fit, you want to make sure first!

Scooter durability - Eighty percent of scooter buyers choose 3 wheels scooter ovber 4. why? scooters with 3 wheels have a better turning radius and lighter. if you are using the scooter for outdoors 4 wheelers are better and provide more stability.

Transportation - Will you be transporting your scooter in the trunk of a car? If so, you need to consider a scooter that disassembles. Most of the scooters do disassemble into three pieces, and the heaviest piece is about 28lbs. So, you might need to consider how much weight your spouse, friends or caregivers can lift in order to get that into the trunk of your car. another option is to consider getting a scooter lift.

The Seat - while most of the stock seats that come with scooters are comfortable, if you spend a long time on the scooter you can request an upgrade to a more comfortable chair, usually called Captain seat.

Accessories - There are many options from baskets to walker holders, and many of these options have an additional charge.

Colors - One of the most popular colors is red, followed by blue. Some scooters come with extra set of different colors.

Tires - Most scooters now come with solid tires. These eliminate the issue of flat tires.

The Tiller - If you have limited ability to grip, be sure you don't get a scooter that has knobs for release mechanisms. The tiller is like the handlebars of a bicycle, and it can be moved forward for easy access to sit down, the moved back in place for when you are ready to drive on. Some scooters are made with a lever that allows you to just move it with the push of your hand to release the Tiller.

A new mobility scooter has the advantage, like anything else that is purchased new, of not having undergone any use and you have a reasonable expectation that no major faults should occur in the first year or two of you taking delivery of your mobility scooter. Set against this, however, is the issue of cost. Like a car, once taken out of the shop, the resale value of a mobility scooter drops fairly rapidly, regardless of whether it has been used every day or just once a week. With this in mind, it is always worth looking in the local newspapers or advertisements in shop windows for mobility scooters that are for sale.
