Many ordinary activities require the use of respiratory protection like painting, sanding, cutting, and landscaping. Disposable masks (dust masks) are a convenient and economical solution for personal respiratory protection. They are perfect for short term exposure to fine dust but less effective and comfortable if used in longer duration. A good dust mask will filter fine dust particles, but because they do not form an air tight seal between your face and the mask they should only be used for short term exposure. Longer exposure will often require the use of a respirator.
